About Lakeland Vision
Lakeland Vision was established in 2007 and enjoys a consistently excellent reputation for cataract and refractive surgery throughout Cumbria, north Lancashire and southern Scotland. Our director, Mr Gerard Ainsworth, prides himself on being approachable and understanding, and will always discuss all available options and make recommendations best suited to your needs. For your peace of mind, we offer complete continuity of care – we guarantee that you will see the same consultant at every appointment.
Mr Gerard Ainsworth is a highly experienced consultant ophthalmic surgeon with an NHS practice based at the North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust in Carlisle and Whitehaven, where he has worked as clinical director for the ophthalmic service. His specialist interests include cataract and refractive surgery, as well as glaucoma.
Mr Ainsworth graduated from the University of Manchester in 1995 and began his ophthalmic training at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton before moving to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and then Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham to further his surgical skills and undertake advanced subspecialist training in glaucoma. He completed his comprehensive specialist training with a fellowship in corneal surgery at the Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton in 2006.
Gerard is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and holds a postgraduate diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Twice a year he teaches trainee surgeons at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is a member of:
- United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons
- European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons
- British Society of Refractive Surgeons
Outside work, Gerard lives with his wife and two children in the beautiful Lake District. He is passionate about skiing and hits the slopes as much as he can, both in the Lakes (when the weather allows) and in Europe. Gerard is a frustrated sailor at heart, and so enjoys watching his children sail on Ullswater. He and the family, along with Megan the dog, also love walking the fells and sampling any local hostelries that might happen to be en route!
I have been a patient of Mr Ainsworth for the past eight to nine years. I have always found him very approachable, reassuring and caring.
He is an excellent surgeon, who explains the medical situation and options of treatment clearly. Decisions of treatment are mutually reached and agreed.
Mrs Ainsworth’s wife. Mrs Suzanne Ainsworth, his P.A. is always very patient, kind and accommodating when appointments are required or Mr Ainsworth needs to be contacted.
I have no hesitation in recommending “Lakeland Vision”.

I have found Mr Ainsworth to be a most approachable, helpful, and effective Consultant . Clearly he is an extremely accomplished surgeon, and apart from that his manner and explanation of problems emanates huge confidence. I have had glaucoma for many years, and I am really pleased to now be a patient of Mr Ainsworth who has given me great faith in the future of my eyes in various areas including driving requirements.
Massive thanks to Mr Ainsworth for the eye surgery – all going well – I still cannot believe it when I wake up every morning and can see clearly. This has made such a difference to my quality of life – climbing, swimming, travelling oversea for work and for pleasure – thanks so much again!
I have cancelled the sub to my opticians but the money is going to RNIB instead – and gathered a HUGE pile of contact lens stuff/ spectacles etc etc for charity 🙂
